The park and rose gardens

In Joséphine’s time, Malmaison was renowned for its gardens, which nurtured scores of exotic species that had never before flowered in France, such as hibiscus, camellia and the heavenly magnolia soulangeana. They are still very lovely today. Behind the house extends a fine park in the English style, cut through by a picturesque stream and dotted with landmark trees – including a cedar of Lebanon planted by the imperial couple themselves, in 1800. On either side of the front courtyard stand two roseries, a distant echo of Malmaison’s legendary collections from the latter half of the nineteenth century. (The question of whether there were roses here in Joséphine’s own time, incidentally, is something of a historical mystery, but popular legend has it that the Empress cultivated scores of them herself.) The Roseraie moderne on the north side features repeat-flowering varieties; the Roseraie ancienne, on the south side, has precious old varieties that flower just once, in June.
